Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water Heaters in Denver

Tankless water heaters, also known as demand-type or instantaneous water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed. They don’t produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters, which can save you money.

How They Work

Tankless water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. As a result, tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don’t need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water. However, a tankless water heater’s output limits the flow rate.

Tankless water heaters may provide hot water at a rate of 2–5 gallons (7.6–15.2 liters) per minute. Gas-fired tankless water heaters produce higher flow rates than electric ones. Sometimes, however, even the largest, gas-fired model cannot supply enough hot water for simultaneous, multiple uses in large households. For example, taking a shower and running the dishwasher at the same time can stretch a tankless water heater to its limit. To overcome this problem, you can install two or more tankless water heaters, connected in parallel for simultaneous demands of hot water for necessary use of hot water throughout the home at the same time.

Advantages and Disadvantages

For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy-efficient than conventional storage-tank water heaters. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water — around 86 gallons per day. You can achieve even greater energy savings of 27%–50% if you install a demand water heater at each hot water outlet.

The initial cost of a tankless water heater is greater than that of a conventional storage water heater, but tankless water heaters will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs, which could offset its higher purchase price. Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years. In contrast, storage water heaters last 10–15 years.

Tankless water heaters can avoid the standby heat losses associated with storage water heaters. However, although gas-fired tankless water heaters tend to have higher flow rates than electric ones, they can waste energy if they have a constantly burning pilot light. This can sometimes offset the elimination of standby energy losses when compared to a storage water heater. In a gas-fired storage water heater, the pilot light heats the water in the tank so the energy isn’t wasted.

The cost of operating a pilot light in a tankless water heater varies from model to model. Ask the manufacturer how much gas the pilot light uses for the model you’re considering. If you purchase a model that uses a standing pilot light, you can always turn it off when it’s not in use to save energy. Also consider models that have an intermittent ignition device (IID) instead of a standing pilot light. This device resembles the spark ignition device on some gas kitchen ranges and ovens.

Installation and Maintenance

Proper installation and maintenance of your demand water heater can optimize its energy efficiency. Proper installation depends on many factors. These factors include fuel type, climate, local building code requirements, and safety issues, especially concerning the combustion of gas-fired water heaters. Therefore, it’s best to have a qualified plumbing and heating contractor install your demand water heater.

I love this company! The service technician (Brian Smith) arrived right on time on a Saturday evening. He was very... though explaining to me what had happened to my furnace and what the cost would be for emergency service. He said my cost would go down considerably if I waited until Monday. I couldn't have done that if he hadn't supplied me with his very own space heaters! I was able to stay warm all weekend and he promptly returned on Monday ahead of schedule to finish the job. Very professional, honest and someone I felt good about having in my home. Will always call NOW Heating and Air - they are trustworthy and really care.read more

What can i say about this company? Only great things , I had contacted Sam Johnstone about a replacement furnace as he... was referred to me by my realtor PJ Magin.sam was a great guy he was able to get out to me right away, he was also willing to go and the extra mile and get us some space heaters during the wait until my new furnace arrived. The guys Rod and Roberto were great !! Super friendly, willing to explain the process and what to expect after the install was completed. After the techs were done cleaning up there tools , dust and drop clothes , my house was cleaned better then when they showed up, my apologies guys. There was a complication with the gas lines, no fault of there own the furnace was not properly working, well needless to say we had to have xcel called out to investigate the lines. Well through some miracle they were out and replaced my meter within an hour. I expected the techs to take there lunch and come back after and hour or so , Nope they were there with xcel, figuring out the issue. Mind you these guys were already a few hours in and i expected them to take thier break. The furnace was still not working right so rod removed the clog and fixed it about 20 more minutes . The burner was clogged and he waws able to clear it . Thenhe finished up the paper work and got us the warranty info and all paperwork was sqaured away. Still not having taken a break. I recommend these guys and this company, price was right where they said it would cost, the guys were super friendly and helpful. They even took a scrap pile of wood i had lying around. Love the new furnace super effecient and warms right up. Shame i have to sell it now!. Wish i could take pictures ...what a improvement thanks so much!read more

The house was initially bought in August. Before the purchase was completed the furnace inspected by NOW due to a... slight natural gas smell in the upstairs bedroom. They came out and "inspected" it saying "no leaks found!" for $150. After smelling the natural gas smell getting worse for months we had Excel come out and take a look. They found a 10% LEL leak coming from where the gas line enters the regulator for the furnace. We called NOW to come fix the problem that they initially said was okay just months before. The repair tech came out, and determined it was the regulator needing replaced. He went back to the shop and got the new regulator only to figure out when he got back to the house that it was not the correct one. Another 1.5 hours later he returned for the second time with the correct regulator. It was installed, heat working and everything was good. Not. Not only can I not see where the "leak" was coming from on the old regulator, but the install tech left a lead wire on the inside of the furnace bypassing the thermostat which led us to not be able to turn off the heat for 7 hours (4am). At which point he had to come back for, yes, the third time in read more
